While
Cody went out waterskiing again this morning, Veda, Eric and I went for
breakfast at the pub. I had a toasted bacon, egg and cheese sandwich that
was very tasty and they both got the 'little hangover,' basically a little
bit of everything. Their meals came with a huge bowl of grated cheddar
cheese. I will tell you one thing, if you order something with cheese
in this country, you will get a ton of cheese. No doubt. The flies were
pretty brutal, especially after the food came out, so by the time we were
done eating, I was ready to get out of there.
After
breakfast, we packed up a bit while the boys ate and then we all went
out on the boat. Courtney stayed up on the waterskis on her first attempt
for the first time ever! We got lots of pictures and a short movie for
proof. Cody showed off on one ski and tried jumping a few wakes.
Before
we left Club Elani, I decided to see how hot it was since it felt about
95 degrees out. The thermometer on Eric's alarm clock hit 108 degrees
in the shade. Thank goodness it was dry heat! When I attempted to test
the heat again around 1:30 pm, the alarm clocked slipped into the sun
and promptly reset itself. I think the batteries got too hot.
Veda, Eric
and I left early with much of the equipment because we wanted to take
the scenic (long) way home. We stopped off in this great little winery
town of 2,000 people, Riebeek Kasteel, for a drink at The
Traveller's Rest. The owner and his wife had just remodeled the place
over the last several months and he was eager to show us the rooms when
Veda mentioned she lives nearby. All the rooms had a different theme with
huge beds and showers and beautiful artistic touches. I ordered us some
cider while Eric made friends with the local dog, Mickey.
The
recommended place, Kasteelberg Bistro, was closed for dinner, but Eric
ordered a kiwi Brutal Fruit while Veda and I had a local red wine outside
on the patio. She mentioned that this would be a good place to come if
we could convince the whole family to visit South Africa. I told her I
would give it a try. We drove around Riebeek Kasteel for a bit but before
we left and I made sure Eric got a photo of the huge church in the center
of town. There were many beautiful personal gardens in bloom and lines
of vineyards on the outskirts of town.
Starving
at this point, we found Cardelli's, a pizza place in Malmesbury, on the
main street. Eric and I felt like champagne, so we ordered a bottle and
it came out warm with an ice bucket. We had to wait awhile to drink it,
but it was very good, especially for the price. I had a bacon and mushroom
pizza and Eric had a not-so-spicy Southwest chicken pizza. Veda made us
order the brandy pudding for dessert, of which there was barely any left
when she returned from the rest room. Eric ended his meal with a huge
waffle with ice cream on top. The whole meal cost under $30 including
drinks.
It was a
straight shot home from there and we were plenty tired from all the food
and sun. An interesting view was seeing Table Mountain lit up at night
from the spotlights around its base as we drove back through Cape Town.
