Scotland 2018: Isle of Skye – Eilean Donan Castle, Fairy Pools, Portree

On our way to the Isle of Skye, we stopped off at Invermoriston Falls (a falls we photographed a year ago) to take advantage of some blue skies.

Then it was time to head west toward Loch Cluanie and beautiful sweeping vistas.

And goats!

We reached Eilean Donan Castle just as a parking spot opened up in the small lot. How lucky! The castle was a bit pricey, so we skipped going inside, but enjoyed the views from the outside nevertheless.

Once we passed over the Skye Bridge, the scenery changed from shades of green to browns. We stopped near Loch Ainort for a beautiful roadside falls with Cuillin Hill in the background.

By this point we were hungry so we stopped for lunch at Seumas’ Bar in Sligachan. My Cuillin Skink soup was delicious but my duck salad and Eric’s falafel balls were just okay. The beer from next door was a good value and went down easy.

After lunch we explored a bit, checking out the old stone bridge and building a few small cairns.

Our next destination was the Fairy Pool hike. Getting there was a bit stressful, as the one lane road is rather busy with traffic to this location. Luckily, we found a reasonable parking spot for this fun and relatively easy hike. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves… so many waterfalls!

After a long day of driving we parked the car in Portree and walked to Merchant Bar for drinks. For dinner we tried to go to 1 Bosville Terrace, but it was full for the evening. We found that they don’t respond to emails or facebook, which explains why we didn’t have a reservation… anyway, we were able to make a reservation for the following evening. After checking out some other menus we ended up at Caledonian Cafe around 8:45pm – just before closing. Leandra enjoyed her local mussels and a blood pudding/haggis stack, while Eric had fish and chips paired with an Islay red beer.

Natalie exploring a tiny alley!  black pudding + haggis topped with bacon
exploring small alleyways; all my cholesterol for the year in one appetizer!

The whisky on offer in town was rather small, so we stopped at the Co-op to get wine and snacks and stayed in for the rest of the night.
