For our flight from Italy back to the US we had the option for a multi-day stopover in Germany. Not too far from Frankfurt is the bulk of Germany’s wine region along the Rhine and Mosel rivers, so we decided to make this area the final destination on our trip. Since we were flying to Germany in the evening we wanted to stay relatively close to the airport, making the city of Mainz a good stop for our first night.
For dinner we had a reservation at Kamin, known for their flammkuchen. The inside was surprisingly busy for 8pm on a Monday, and with the small wood fires, also very warm and cozy! I had a glass (noting the generous 0.2L pours in Germany!) of the Grauer Burgunder Qualitätswein trocken, and Leandra had the Spätburgunder trocken (Pinot noir). We then split the “Kürbis” flammkuchen that had ham, pumpkin, walnuts and blue cheese. Very tasty!
The next morning we walked around town, starting with the Mainz Cathedral. This is a tall church with huge ceilings.
Interior doors lead to peaceful garden courtyard.
Sadly, the Gutenburg Museum was closed but Leandra did spend some time admiring the type pieces displayed in the courtyard.
From there we walked through a pedestrian area up to St. Stephens, famous for its Chagall windows. Inside everything feels blue!
We decided to take a different route back to our hotel, meandering across town, enjoying the lack of cars along several streets – such a change after Italy! Many of the shops appeared to be smaller and independent too. Overall we found Mainz quite charming, and would definitely choose to stay here in the future.
Hyatt Regency Mainz
The Hyatt had quite good reviews, and it seems well deserved. Public spaces were sleek, the front desk staff friendly, and it has a good location in town next to the river and near multiple restaurants. Parking was relatively easy – just take a ticket to get in, then show the ticket to front desk before you checkout.
Our room was nice, with a comfortable bed, plus a huge bathroom with a tub and shower and nice bath products.
Breakfast was included with our booking. The big buffet had loads of options including bread and pastries, a muesli bar, eggs, cheese, meat, fruit, and mimosas. Leandra also liked her latte made to order.
Overall, a great place to stay in Mainz.
