NY Summer 2021: shucking oysters!

A few days after we arrived on Long Island I started noticing “Local Oysters” placards popping up along the side of the main and north roads. Normally, I would get my oyster fix once or twice a summer at Case’s but what if I learned to shuck my own oysters? Considering the local prices at restaurants were about $3 per oyster, I figured it was worth a little research.

I landed on picking up some oysters from Little Ram Oysters as they are a female-owned business (and a couple). Plus, their little ‘farmstand’ is super cute.

For $40 cash I got 25 oysters in a burlap sack, a lemon, and a branded shucking knife. Time to get to work!

I found their quick video online very helpful but in reality, it just takes a lot of practice and you have to see what entry point works best for you. I do recommend a towel to protect your hands – the knife isn’t pointy but it still hurts if you accidentally jab yourself with it (as Eric and I can both attest).

In the end, we were able to open every single oyster and I got a much better feel for the technique.

I highly recommend pairing with a sparkling wine from Lenz. :)

Overall, I think the Little Ram Oysters are a great deal (and delicious), plus I learned a new life skill. Can’t wait to apply my technique (and shucking knife) to some NC oysters next!
