I had good luck in Bari with an airbnb cooking class so I decided to take a chance on this highly rated class in Buenos Aires. I arrived a few minutes early and was the only person present for several minutes. Eventually an entire family from Edmonton, Canada showed up! Two parents, their four grown kids, a few of their spouses, and one 11 month old.

This was a great experience and lived up to all of the positive reviews. Fran was a gracious and friendly host who provided lots of background info on the food culture of Argentina and plenty of direction in the kitchen. All the tasks were divided up so each person in our group of 8 had a job to do that contributed to all the dishes. When it came time to flip crepes, make empanadas, or roll dough for the chipa, we all got to participate. It felt like a good mix of hands-on time and enjoying our cooking. Highly recommended!

Our five courses included:
“Picada” – traditional preserves and homemade bread, served with a vermouth cocktail. (prepared for us ahead of time)

Snack – Chipá: balls of yuca bread filled with cheese (shows the mixture of Guarani culture and Spanish influences in Argentina), we prepped some with membrillo inside and the dipping sauces were homemade BBQ, sriracha and aioli. Naturally gluten free and very tasty.

Entree – Meat empanadas and chimichurri, we made the dough, dipping sauce, and filling from scratch and then Fran taught us a few different folds.

Main – Humita in a pot: a corn-based dish typical from the Andean region. This was not my favorite. Made of grilled corn and squash, the texture was a bit one note. Maybe would try it at home with the addition of something crunchy, like pumpkin seeds.

Dessert – Flamed dulce de leche crepes. We made the crepe dough, added pre-made dulce de leche inside and then folded and flamed them with brandy. Very rich!

I also enjoyed the red wine and homemade ginger lemonade.
