Argentina: where we stayed

Casa Joseph (Palermo, Buenos Aires)

We arrived around 1:15pm and our room was ready, yeah! The host checking us in was very friendly and sent us a huge list of local recommendations via Whatsapp. Our room was spacious and had a small kitchenette with two heat pads, a kettle and a small fridge. We had to search for the silverware as that and the microwave were in a different part of the room. In the bathroom, the counter had plenty of space and the shower pressure and soaps were good. For sleeping, the bed was a bit firm and the two pillows were small, plus the room is very noisy! We were on the 5th floor and the road noise was abundant at all hours. Thankfully we had earplugs.

We checked out the roof deck for the views but didn’t try the pool, it looked nice.

Airbnb (Villa La Angostura)

Thankfully our host, Dario, was responsive on Whatsapp because our flight was late and the car rental pickup was a bit more involved as well, meaning we arrived right at dusk and we definitely needed assistance finding the place! The rather large apartment building is located on a rutted dirt road on the edge of town with parking spots around the back of the building.
The front half bathroom was flooded when we arrived but fixed on Monday while we were out exploring. Our stay was pleasant with a comfortable main bedroom, good shower pressure, and a functional washing machine, though basic amenities like coffee, salt/pepper and bathroom toiletries were not provided. The internet speed was reasonable at 35Mbps up/down, and while there was some noise from upstairs, it remained relatively quiet. We liked the proximity into town, though the uphill driveway on uneven ground might be a challenge for those with mobility issues, and you were sure to get dusty walking on the powdery dirt. Overall, we enjoyed the space and would recommend this location!

Airbnb (Bariloche)

After exploring all day we arrived in town around 4:30pm. We lucked out and found a street parking spot about three blocks away, which let us get the keys and fob that would let us in the parking garage. Communication was excellent – our host let us into the building remotely and all instructions were spot on. This apartment included a parking spot in the garage, and while it was tight it was not in our top 5 most traumatic parking experiences! During our stay the garage door was being worked on for several hours so we lost our in/out privileges. The host gave us a few hours notice so we could get back in time which was okay.

The apartment itself is on two floors, a half-bath and kitchen / living room on one floor and the bedroom and a full bath (and balcony) on the top floor. Very nice views from the balcony, but no chairs which was a bit of an oversight. The space got really hot during the day due to the floor to ceiling windows, so we kept the drapes closed when we went out and opened the windows/doors for a breeze when we were in which moderated the situation fine. The kitchen is well equipped and even included salt and oil, finally! But weirdly we were only given two towels apiece and no towels for the downstairs bathroom or a floor mat for the shower. The washing machine worked great and the drying rack was helpful.

The internet was spotty and slow (10 down, 13 up), plus it dropped a few times resulting in us turning off the power to the entire apartment in order to restart the router. Supposedly this was being changed the day we left. Overall, would stay here again.

Martina Apart (Puerto Iguazú)

Check in was a bit odd as the owner met us at the gated entrance but he had to drive over from elsewhere. We were delayed, which I communicated through the Booking.com app but we still had to wait several minutes in the dark on the street with all our luggage. Unit #2 was a hotbox when we got in, near 40C, as the AC was off and windows were closed (which in hindsight is good as there are no screens). Took a while to cool down… and the owner stated we can’t have AC on while we are out. The plunge pool was at least refreshing at night.

Overall, the apartment was a bit grim with some issues: lighting is mostly the harsh blue-white style and while the place looks okay in photos, it feels dated and old in person. There was a large gap in the exterior door in the bedroom that let noise (and possibly bugs) in. The keys were a pain to use and I didn’t like that there isn’t a button or buzzer to get out of the property from the inside, you have to unlock the giant gate on both sides. Also, no bedside lamps, only candles?!

The price and location was good when we thought we were going to take the bus to the falls but we should have reconsidered this option as the distance to the main drag is too far when it’s 90+ degrees. Would not recommend. The owner also charged us an additional 11% when we paid via credit card, which was not mentioned during booking.

Buenos Aires Marriott (Microcentro, Buenos Aires)

Check in was easy, and we were assigned a room on the 6th floor (with a strange hump in the floor!). Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed for a one night stay. We appreciated the free glass of wine and snack plate coupon that was offered when we checked in, which we used for a light dinner that evening. Late check-out was not available (the hotel was fully booked) but we were able to leave our bags for the afternoon while we explored.

As a bonus, the fitness center was quite nice, and the views from the top (23rd) floor off the pool area were amazing!
