Faroe Islands 2024: Day 4, Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur

Weather to the north was supposed to be cloudier, so we decided to explore south this day. Our first stop was the waterfall in Hósvík. We tried to find a place to park in town but had no luck, so Eric took a quick shot from a bridge as I idled the car. The waterfall is definitely best viewed from the main road but, unfortunately, there are no pullouts.

From there we headed south along 10, taking the winding 50 road up, up, up, for some amazing overlooks on our way to Torshavn.

Once in town we made Svartafoss waterfall our first stop. There is a narrow residential road leading to a small parking area near the falls, but we couldn’t understand the traffic sign so decided to just park next to a store and walk the ½ km to the falls. Several horses greeted us en route.

Next we wanted to see the harbor and downtown of Tórshavn. After several days with nearly no people it was a little strange to have traffic lights and pedestrians again! We made our way to a free 8 hour lot near the town center, set our time disc and headed out on foot to explore. After picking up pastries from Breyðvirkið (cinnamon roll was a bit dry but custard danish was good), we enjoyed the sunshine and got some lovely photos of the town park, cathedral, harbor, Tinganes (parliament) and some old village streets that have been there for hundreds of years.

From Tórshavn we headed even further south to Kirkjubøur to check out the stone ruins of the Magnus Cathedral, built near the 1300s. The other church on site, Saint Olav’s dates from the 12th century and is the oldest church in the Faroe Islands. It was unexpectedly open, so we took a peek inside there as well.

Before heading back north, we stopped in at Miklagarður, the largest grocery store on the island, located on the lower level of a small mall in north Tórshavn. We found a bunch of items there not available at our smaller market including smoked trout.

Loaded up with supplies for the rest of the stay, we made one last stop at Týggjará waterfall before heading back to our apartment.

A bit after dinner, we walked into Hvalvík to take some photos of the beautiful sunset.
