Faroe Islands 2024: Day 1, arrival, Múlafossur, Bøur, Leynar and our airbnb

Our first task upon arrival was to scope out the duty free at the airport. Alcohol is notoriously expensive on the island with only a few dedicated shops sell during limited hours. We decided on a reasonable boxed French rosé and a six pack of local cider, all for ~$40 USD.

Next, we stood in line for our rental car at Sixt (though the car we received was marked with a carrent.fo sticker). No shenanigans at the counter but our gas tank wasn’t completely full (7/8) as stated on the paperwork. I was told to take a photo and let them know when I dropped the car off but I ended up just filling the car up near our airbnb and delivering it with a mostly full tank, still 8/8.

Our first stop was the famous Múlafossur falls and it did not disappoint. Located about 15 minutes north of the airport, and after our first narrow tunnel we came down a hill side and found the pull-off with several spots available for parking. From there it is a short walk to the overlook of the falls dropping into the sea.

We crossed over the top of the falls to get a different perspective but declined walking further up the hill. Later we realized people were likely looking for puffins but we while we saw a lot of sea birds, there was only one bird that may have been a puffin.

On the way back toward the airport, we stopped near Bøur for a view of the fjord and another falls right by the roadside. We also stopped in Sandavágur to photograph a gorgeous church.

Heading through our first paid tunnel of the trip (Vágatunnilin), we were treated to green and blue colored lights.

Upon exiting, we turned north to check out the viewpoint overlooking Kvívík and then stopped in Leynar for a views of a small cascade.

At this point, we were starting to feel our overnight flight so we checked into our Hvalvík airbnb, unpacked, and headed to the nearby Bonus grocery store for snacks and breakfast items. Our plan was to self-cater our meals as restaurants are sparse on the island and also expensive. After dinner, Eric walked into town to get a photo of the small church and the hillside cascade. Then we spent the rest of the evening trying to stay up until 10pm!

Our airbnb

We had a wonderful stay at the boathouse, where the spectacular view of the water and mountains hits you as soon as you walk into the main living space.

The apartment was quite homey, with a comfortable couch and good heating throughout. We self-catered all our meals and the kitchen had everything we needed. Plus we were a five minute drive from two grocery stores and a gas station which is very convenient in a country with few sizable towns. Also, the washer and dryer was extra helpful for cleaning up after the muddy hikes!

The apartment has three bedrooms, roughly similar in size. We stayed in the room closer to the road, and it wasn’t noisy at night as we initially feared. The only minor drawback was the limited storage space; we found ourselves wishing for more hangers and a larger dresser.

This location is perfect for exploring all the nearby islands and I definitely recommend the boathouse apartment for anyone visiting the Faroes.
