removing the freecause search from Firefox

by | Oct 28, 2010 | Daily life

A few months ago I installed the AA tool bar to earn some extra miles from American. Uninstalling the toolbar was easy (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > Uninstall) but all my address bar searches continued to go through the AAdvantage Shopping Mall and I discovered freecause was the culprit. I looked all over the place for a solution and although many people seemed to have this issue, the suggestions weren’t well documented (or helpful). Let me just say that whomever you download the toolbar from will not tell you how to completely get rid of it. Lesson learned.

This worked for me:

Type “about:config” (no quotes) into the Firefox address bar and click “It’s okay… I’ll be careful” when the browser warns you about voiding your agreement. Then, at the top of the page by Filter, search for “keyword”. When I did this, three results came up and freecause was two of them. Right click in the value column listing for anything that shows a freecause string and select “reset”.

Mine reset to Google (which is what I wanted). Hope these steps help someone else in the same situation.
