After
breakfast we drove into Kona for toiletries and happened upon some
reasonably priced wine at the KTA supermarket. Unfortunately, I
had handed my ID to Eric the day before for safekeeping and he had
left his wallet back at the hotel. After overcoming a slight anxiety
about driving a rental car around Hawaii with no license on me we
drove back to the Hilton. The rest of the afternoon was spent chilling
out snorkeling in the lagoon, but we vowed to return for the wine
that evening. The snorkeling was simply amazing!

Sidenote:
Before we left Chicago, we ventured into an Arlington Heights dive
shop Eric found online. The woman in the shop was very helpful and
we decided to get dry snorkels and masks. Dry snorkels are essentially
just that; the snorkel automatically closes when you dive, so when
you resurface you don't have to clear the tube. After a little while
I became more confident about my breathing and was diving like a pro!

We
snorkeled around a bunch of rocks near the waterfall and saw many
tropical fish - puffers, yellow tangs, and schools of other fish.
After drying out we munched on our afternoon cookie fix and traveled
back into Kona for dinner. KTA was the first stop, where we purchased
a bottle of white wine and 2 bottles of champagne. Then we began our
search for the Sibu Café.

The advertisement mentioned that the café was hard
to spot, so after driving around the block twice we found a free parking
lot and decided to walk around until we found it. At first, the place
looked a little run down, but we wound up having a very tasty
(and affordable!) meal. I chose the pan seared Ahi tuna rubbed
with spicy peppers over rice and vegetables and Eric had peanut chicken
with rice and veggies. So much food! |
After
dinner we went shopping along the sea wall. We got a Hawaiian shirt
for Eric and a birthday present for Todd. Our last stop of the night
was a trip to the Kona Brewing Company, which was completely crowded
- a good sign. We tried some of their cheesy fries and a flight
of four of their signature beers. Eric liked the Longboard Lager
the best while I enjoyed the Pahoehoe Porter.
