Scotland 2013: Edinburgh castle

by | Jun 30, 2013 | International Travel

On our second morning we started with Edinburgh Castle using our internet-purchased tickets to avoid the ticket office queues.

The castle has been variously used as a garrison, hospital, prison, and purely for ceremony. All that history comes out as you explore – for example, graffiti from American sailors in the ‘American War of Independence‘ or the intricate woodwork in the Great Hall. We were rather lucky to get to the Crown Jewels museum early in the day without any wait and relatively few people to hurry us along; I doubt it is normally that calm.

Yes, the site is touristy and pricey, but we really enjoyed the great views and several interesting museums and think it was well worth a visit.
